NUS Computing

NUS Computing · 50 Years

Empower the Next Generation

NUS Computing began fifty years ago as a small department under the Faculty of Science. Today, it has evolved into a world-class school of its own – ranked 1st in Asia and 4th globally* – that stands at the forefront of technological innovation and talent development. This incredible half-century journey was built entirely by the generations that came before us. As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary, our mission is to ensure that academic brilliance is never silenced by financial hardship. Together, let us ensure that merit, not wealth, dictates opportunity, and keep our world-class computing education accessible to all.

Why this matters now

Over five decades of growth, NUS Computing has become a global anchor for the digital economy. Yet, as our international prestige and student enrollment soar, we are faced with a sobering reality on the ground: talent is universal, but financial security is not.

  • About one in five Computing undergraduates – translating to over 1,200 students within our community – require financial assistance each year.
  • The Hidden Struggle: Nearly 30% of these financial aid applications come from vulnerable households surviving on a monthly per-capita income of $750 or less. For them, a bursary isn't just a grant – it's a lifeline.
  • The Cost of Tools and Time: A computing degree demands mandatory, high-performance hardware and specialised software that places a steep upfront strain on families. To make ends meet, many students are forced to balance gruelling academic schedules with part-time work – sacrificing the crucial hackathons, student projects, and co-curricular activities that truly build a future leader.
  • Existing financial aid provides a baseline, but it often falls short of the hidden, non-tuition realities of a digital education. For a computing student, basic academic survival requires reliable, high-specification laptops, software licenses, and stable connectivity. The reality on our campus is that some of our brightest peers lack even basic internet access at home—making an urgent bursary the difference between a student keeping pace with their coursework or falling entirely behind.

As a community, we can ensure excellence is not limited by personal wealth.

What the bursary makes possible

A world-class computing education demands immense focus, deep collaboration, and the right resources. Yet, for hundreds of brilliant minds on campus, the pressure to excel is quietly overshadowed by the heavy, daily anxiety of making ends meet. The SoC 50th Anniversary Bursary acts as a crucial safety net, transforming a student's university journey from one of survival to one of true opportunity.

Your support delivers a stabilising cash supplement that directly absorbs the cost of mandatory technology and daily living pressures. It ensures that no talented student is forced to study in isolation, balance exhausting part-time work at the expense of their health, or watch their potential slip away under the weight of financial strain. You are not just giving a grant; you are giving them the breathing space to learn, connect, and thrive alongside their peers.

A Permanent Legacy of Care
We are no longer looking for temporary, "stop-gap" solutions to student distress. As an endowed fund, your gift represents a lifetime investment in equal opportunity. The capital is safely preserved and grown in perpetuity, creating a continuous, self-sustaining pipeline of support that will protect and uplift future cohorts of computing students for the next fifty years and beyond.

One Shared Mission

To commemorate this half-century landmark, we invite our broad network of supporters to invest in our student body in the manner that aligns best with their philanthropic goals. For Singapore tax residents, qualifying donations are eligible for a 2.5 times tax deduction, an official framework that powerfully backs your partnership and ensures your generosity leaves the greatest possible impact on campus.

Choose to make an immediate, lasting impact by giving directly to the fund from wherever you are, or join us to celebrate our community in person at our anniversary event.

Direct Bursary Giving

Supporting our students is the true heart of our 50-year legacy. Raising vital resources for this permanent safety net does not begin or end with a single day of celebration – it is an ongoing mission to protect our student body as a whole. You do not need to attend an event, play a round of golf, or participate in festivities to make a profound difference on campus.

Any direct contribution to the endowed SoC 50th Anniversary Bursary Fund goes entirely towards helping our student body. Your direct gift provides critical peace of mind to those navigating financial hardship, ensuring they can stand on equal footing with their peers, immerse themselves in our rigorous curriculum, and fully realise their potential.

Direct Bursary Contributions

  • Bursary Gift — Any amount
  • Give as a one-time, monthly, or annual contribution to suit your giving preferences.
  • Donate securely through the official NUS giving portal, with 100% of your contribution earmarked directly for student support.
  • No event participation or tournament attendance is required to support our students.
  • Your direct gift is preserved in our endowed fund to protect and support computing students in perpetuity.

Establish a Named Legacy: Sub-Naming Opportunities

For donors who wish to create a deeply personal impact or honor a multi-generational legacy, distinctive sub-naming opportunities are available within the collective fund:

  • The Threshold: Total contributions of S$50,000 are eligible for formal sub-naming, permanently associating a family, corporate, or graduation cohort name with a branch of student relief.
  • Flexible Pledging Pathways: A meaningful legacy can be built comfortably over time. We warmly welcome structured multi-year pledges to meet this threshold—such as a S$10,000 annual pledge over 5 years or a S$25,000 annual pledge over 2 years.
  • Commencement: In line with official guidelines, the named sub-bursary will formally take effect once the full S$50,000 milestone has been received. *All gift-related sub-naming is subject to final approval by the University.
