NUS Computing

DEAN’S
MESSAGE_

In 2025, we will celebrate 50 years of computing education in Singapore—a truly significant milestone marking an incredible half-century journey for NUS School of Computing. Our history began in 1975 with the Computer Science department at the then Nanyang University and has evolved through various phases to become the prestigious institution we are today.

Fifty years ago, we took on the challenge to introduce an information technology-based education in support of Singapore’s industrialisation aspirations. Since then, we have continued to nurture educators and researchers to excel in both teaching and research frontiers. We assume thought leadership roles in national IT research institutions and enterprises, while maintaining our noble mission of educating IT professionals to ease Singapore’s progression into the Fourth Industrialisation Revolution.

Computing education has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years, from basic programming know-how to sophisticated fields such as AI and quantum computing. It has become an indispensable pillar of learning and will continue to be so, empowering individuals with more innovative skills and knowledge. As one of the top computing schools globally, we are honoured to be able to play a pivotal role in harnessing these acquired skills and knowledge to effect change and enhance the quality of life for the betterment of society.

As we reflect on our success, let us pay tribute to our students, faculty and alumni, who have flown our flag high over the 50 years. Their dedication, contribution and influence have laid a strong foundation and set high standards of excellence for our School. Let us build on their good work. We, especially, look forward to the kind support of our alumni for our 50th milestone celebration, which will help create a fresh trajectory of success for NUS Computing.
